I have now read all three books that have been released so far in the Time, Blood and Karma Series. I read the first two one right after the other. Yes they were that good. I made myself wait to read a Poison Tree. This week I couldn't wait any longer. I read A Poison Tree in two nights and I want you to know that this series is up there with the best thrillers/mysteries.
John Dolan has written a character that is so real, I feel like I know him. I feel like if I went to Thailand and traveled to the small island of Samui, I'd find David Braddock. He'd be on a case, a cheating spouse or maybe something more international intrigy.
He would be smart, funny and very charming. He wouldn't be handsome in the classical sense, but women would still gravitate to him. They'd find him very attractive, because he would make them feel taken care of, he'd make them laugh and he would have the perfect amount of danger surrounding him.
To the very astute observer, you would see and maybe even feel the sadness he carries around, like a small coal, being fed constantly by guilt.
Everyone Burns and Hungry Ghost are fast paced mysteries, filled with twists and turns. Complicated enough to keep you guessing and wanting to turn the next page or tap your kindle one more time. What sets these books apart is you are equally caught up in David's life. His relationships. His failings. His big heart. You root for this very flawed man, because he does what we all do, we try our best. We try our best, but we make mistakes.
A Poison Tree is a prequel to the other two books. We get to see how David ended up in Thailand. The characters are many and they are interwoven in such a way that I marvel at how he kept it all straight. Loss comes in all forms. Some big and some small and all the characters in this book have suffered one form or another. Still they carry on and make their way as best they can.
Since its a prequel we know the ending or at least we have an idea. The mystery in this book is how does it happen and who is involved. Mr. Dolan keeps us on our toes with all the characters and how they relate and effect each other. Just when you think you have things figured out another twist makes all of your theories obsolete. I loved this book, its my favorite so far.
So click on the books above, read the blurbs and the reviews. The reviews are many and very glowing. If this doesn't move you to read book one then I haven't done my job. These books are worth your time and you will thank me for it. Do yourself a favor, winter is coming, there is a chill in the air, transport yourself to Samui Thailand and enjoy a heart pounding mystery and some steamy liaisons. I know I only have to sell you on the first one, because then you'll be hooked.
Matt Holgate is a talented author. Some of the passages in his book read like poetry, the descriptions are so vivid you find yourself surrounded by his fantasy world. Just because his prose is beautiful doesn't mean all is flowery and sweet. The book is a combination of fantasy and horror. The horror will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up and give you the urge to look under the bed before you go to sleep. I can't say enough with how good this book is. The characters are 3-D, the world feels real and the danger the small town finds itself in makes you yell at the pages for everyone to get the heck out of there. If you like these genres you owe it to yourself to start this series. If you do you'll be hooked.
